We all know what sort of designs we like when it comes to household china and dinner sets – I personally thought for years that I preferred the plain white plate and toureen combo. As it turns out, I find myself longingly handling bold patterned art deco inspired designs – geometric blacks and gold are a feature that I’ve never really hankered for previously – I have only basic knowledge of both art deco and arts and crafts movements but their effect robustly live on. This turn around seems to stem from a cottage holiday my daughter and I enjoyed earlier this summer – a quick weekend away in the Midlands. We attended an auction of household effects and many of the items were part of the stock of a shop closure. It struck me as incredible that these fabulous art deco designs were not entirely sold out – a whole stock room full of mismatched vegeable dishes and coffee sets etc.
