I have a really beautiful big book published last year by the major heritage property charity. I was visiting one of their places up in the peak district and as is my want, I was happily mooching about in the gift shop and a huge pile of the new, hot off the press editions were being promoted – and being bought at an amazing rate. The book is sumptuous and shows all the major premises that are owned, lvingly restored and maintained with money from our membership. There are a hundreds of places shown and the photos in glorious colour really highlight saliant points. Maybe a property is famous for a distinctive builder, or it was designed by a gifted interior designer and the trust have collected artefacts as near the original as possible. The sense of history cannot be over emphasised, more effective than any text book or dreary classroom!
